A spring hunt in northern California. In addition to the beauty of God’s creation in spring, there is plenty of excitement. Spring turkey hunting uses calling to imitate a hen, and the payoff comes when a gobbler bellows an answer then moves steadily but warily toward what he believes is a hen. Will the gobbler hang up, stopping in an opening far out of range, strutting and gobbling and stubbornly demanding the unseen hen come to him? Every encounter is different, and it's that uncertainty and the one-on-one interaction that makes spring hunts magic.
Shotgun hunters need a shotgun with a full or turkey choke barrel. For those without equipment, shotguns may be shared with others. Bow hunters need a compound or traditional bow with a standard pull of 40 or more pounds, a minimum of five (5) arrows, and five (5) fixed or mechanical broadheads having no less than 7/8 inch in width with metal cutting edges.
Three to four days are needed due to the out-of-state travel required. Hunters typically leave Phoenix Thursday afternoon and return late Sunday night.
Hunters will drive from Phoenix to northern California on Friday, hunt all day Saturday and Sunday plus Monday morning, and return late Monday night.
Accommodations include shared rooms at a local motel.
The adventure is limited to 4-10 hunters.
Spring turkey hunting seasons run from late March through May, depending on location.
